“Now those who were scattered abroad went about through the land from place to place preaching the glad tidings, the Word, the doctrine concerning the attainment through Christ of salvation in the kingdom of God.” Acts 8:4 Amplified
We see now that persecution is beginning in the new church. Stephen has been killed and it appears that Saul is spearheading the attack on the believers. The scriptures say he was dragging people from their homes to put them in prison. Some of the new Christians were so fearful they fled Jerusalem to safer areas like Judea and Samaria. Little did Saul know that he was helping spread the gospel, for Jesus had told the new believers to go into Judea, Samaria and all the world to be His witnesses (Acts 1:8). Our verse today shows that this is exactly what happened when they fled the persecution.
We still have that calling today on us and we should be doing just that. Even if you don’t feel comfortable talking to people you can do what I do so often. I carry gospel tracts in my purse and when I go in a store or other business I leave one somewhere. I believe someone will find it and read it, and who knows, maybe just by reading that tract they will be saved.
