A Christian Journey

“Now in the present case let me say to you, stand-off and withdraw from these men and let them alone. For if this doctrine, purpose, undertaking or movement is of human origin, it will fail and come to nothing. But if it is of God, you will not be able to stop, overthrow or destroy them; you might even be found fighting against God!” Acts 5:38-39  Amplified

In our study of the book of Acts, and the new church, the believers are being brought before the Sanhedrin again. They were already warned to stop preaching about Jesus, even being put in prison, but after a miraculous escape from prison, they are at it again.

Our verse today is a speech given by Gamaliel, who was a Pharisee. He’s telling the rest of the Jewish leaders that others have brought new beliefs and doctrines and they all faded away. Just move on from these men and ignore them and they will fade away as well.

The important thing to see here is that Gamaliel tells these men, and all who read the scriptures today, if believing in Jesus is of men it won’t not last but, if it does then it is of God. Also, he says anyone who doesn’t believe “might even be found fighting against God!”.

Christianity has been around now for more than 2,000 years. I’d say it hasn’t faded away, so why do people still not believe? For me it goes back to the number one problem with man – pride. We either don’t want to submit to the rule of someone else, even the Creator of the universe, or we just want to do whatever it is we want to do, no rules, no limits.  The problem with either of those views is that you get all the problems as well. Wouldn’t it be better to let someone else handle all your problems?

A lot of believers today though compound this issue. THEY don’t turn all their problems over to God or seek His guidance and direction on all of their decisions. So the lost and unbelievers see from our life testimony that it really doesn’t help to trust in God anyway.

We must as believers give our all to the Lord and live each day, each moment, in total trust to Him. Then, maybe unbelievers and doubters will do the same.
