“Then the waters which came down from above stood and rose up in a heap far off, at Adam, the city that is beside Zarethan; and those flowing down toward the Sea of the Arabah, the Salt (Dead) Sea, were wholly cut off . And the people passed over opposite Jericho.” Joshua 3:16 Amplified
I always like to give a little history with old testament scripture. The verse today from Joshua is included in the description of the Israelites taking the promised land. The people are moving toward Jericho to take it, but they must cross the Jordan River first.
Not many people know about the parting of the Jordan River because it’s a much smaller body of water than the Red Sea. Also, when the Israelites crossed the Red Sea pharoah and his army were pursuing them to wipe them out. This later parting of the Jordan was less spectacular, but no less significant.
The primary focus for us today is the Ark of the Covenant that was present as they crossed the parted Jordan River. The Ark represented God’s presence with the people, the water parted when the priests holding the ark stood in the river. Joshua specifically addressed the people to see the Ark of the Lord passing before them.
I believe God’s wants us to always be aware of His presence with us. The Ark of the Covenant is gone, lost to history, no one knows where it went. To me this speaks to the fact that Jesus came to die for us. He fulfilled the law and all the old testament ways. Now as believers He lives in our hearts, always present.
