“So Moses numbered them as he was commanded by the word of the Lord.” Numbers 3:16
How interesting that our 3:16 verse today in Numbers is about numbering. God instructed Moses to take a census of the people who had left Egypt. More specifically in this verse Moses was told to number the Levites, who were the priestly tribe. As believers we are now the priests and priestesses of God (see Revelation 1:6).
I like the introduction to this book that the Amplified bible gives, it says in summary – “This book accounts for the 38 years of wilderness wanderings and tells of the murmuring and rebellion of God’s people and of their subsequent judgment. Divine provision for Israel is apparent throughout the book with the food supply of manna, water, and quails for a population of over 600,000 men, plus women and children throughout the nearly four decades of wilderness travel. Guidance and protection were provided in the pillar of cloud by day and pillar of fire by night.”
One wonders how the Israelites could murmur and rebel from God when he provided and protected them. How about us? Doesn’t He supply our needs? Have you seen his guidance and protection? Let’s not be like the Israelites, but learn from them. The wilderness, for us, are the areas in our life that keep us away from God or that we don’t turn over to Him. Let’s not stay there for forty years, I don’t want to stay there 40 seconds!
