“Jesus approached and breaking the silence said to them, All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to Me. Go then and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them into the name of the Father, and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Teaching them to observe everything that I have commanded you, and behold I am with you all the days to the very close and consummation of the age.” Matthew 28:18-20
What did Jesus say to His followers after His resurrection? That’s what we are looking at, today we start in Matthew.
The first thing He says to do is to go. Now we “go” all day, most from home to work and back. While we are at work we are “going” as we meet and interact with other people. I don’t believe Jesus meant for us to be missionaries to a foreign country, I believe we are all missionaries to the people we meet every day. We also “go” home at the end of the day and there are people there too.
So are we to preach to all the people we meet, telling them about Jesus? Yes, if the opportunity affords itself, we should tell people that Jesus died so that they might have eternal life. First though, we need to BE Jesus to them. BE loving, BE kind, BE caring, BE a listener. Jesus said to “teach people to observe everything that I have commanded you”. What did Jesus command us to do? Didn’t He say that the two greatest commandments were – to love God with all your heart and to love your neighbor as yourself. What’s the best way to teach someone to be loving? By example. The easiest way I’ve found to be loving to someone unlovable is to do it as if it were Jesus. He told us that when we feed or cloth someone that we have done it unto Him.
He also said, I am with you all the days. He will give you the ability to go, you must be willing to obey.
