“So the people of Nineveh believed in God and proclaimed a fast, put on sackloth, in penitent mourning, from the greatest of them to the least of them.” Jonah 3:5
As soon as you read Nineveh you knew where this verse was coming from, the story of Jonah. It’s one of the more well known stories and we usually focus on Jonah being in the belly of the whale, or as the Amplified version says, a great fish. Our verse today though points to the people of Nineveh believing in God, repenting of their sins, fasting and putting on sackcloth (plain clothes). That is what the story is really about, that’s the most important part. As God tells Jonah in the last verse of the book, “And should I not spare Nineveh?”
He wants all of us to be spared if we will repent and believe in Him.
