“And whenever you are fasting, don’t look gloomy, sour, and dreary like the hypocrites, for they put on a dismal countenance, that their fasting may be apparent to and seen by men. Truly I say to you, they have their reward in full already.” Matthew 6:16
During lent many people decide to give up or fast from something, usually it’s some sort of food or drink. You can also fast from doing things as well, whether it is watching tv, playing games, or going out. Whatever you’ve chosen to fast, this scripture encourages us to do so without looking gloomy. This is Jesus talking to us and He’s telling us if we fast for the purpose of drawing closer to God it must be done with a good attitude. In other words, no one should be able to tell that you’re fasting, at least not by your appearance or speech. If you complain about doing it or drag around all gloomy, then all you’ll get is sympathy from other people, God does not honor that.
So let’s put a smile on our face, whatever we choose to fast from, because we’re doing it to please God.
