“Now every athlete who goes into training conducts himself temperately and restricts himself in all things. They do it to win a wreath that will soon wither, but we do it to receive a crown of eternal blessedness, that cannot wither.” 1 Corinthians 9:25
In watching our olympic athletes compete to win medals this scripture comes to mind. All the time and effort they spend preparing themselves for this one event and what do they get? In the times that this verse was written they were receiving wreaths of olive leafs, today they receive a gold, silver or bronze medal. Both can bring them nothing more than the moment of victory, after that the wreath or medal sits on a shelf or in a case to decay.
I’m not much of an athlete, but I know I have the greatest crown of victory one can have and so can you.
It’s great to see our American representatives win a medal for the country, but my prayer is that they spend as much time winning the crown of eternal blessedness.
