“The Samaritan woman said to Jesus, how is it that You, being a Jew, ask me, a Samaritan, and a woman, for a drink? For the Jews have nothing to do with the Samaritans.” John 4:9 (Amplified)
We are continuing to look at the story of the Samaritan woman and her conversation with Jesus. For starters, as stated in this verse, the Jews did not have anything to do with the Samaritans since they were half jewish. Then factor in that Jesus did not know this woman, and in that culture a jewish man did not speak to a woman he did not know. So you can see that Jesus was breaking all kinds of man made rules, but then He liked to do that. This shows us again, we are to please God not man.
Secondly, as pointed out in yesterdays verse, she had come to the well to draw water, she had a need. The beginning of this story says Jesus showed up at the well around noon. Most women in the village went to the well early in the morning when it was cool and they likely socialized as well. So why was this woman going at noon?
We’ll continue to look at that tomorrow.
